Your Summer Moving Timeline

Moving during the summer can make the most sense for a family since the kids are out of school and you and your spouse likely have some time off from work. At EZ Storage® in St. Louis, we know how stressful moving can be, which is why it’s important to put together a timeline of when things need to be completed. If you have items that need to be stored before, during, or after your move, then we can provide the perfect self-storage unit!
In this post, we’ll look at the months of May to August to complete your summer move. While your timeline will likely look a bit different, this will hopefully give you a good place to start.
May
Once the kids are out of school, you can have them help you get started on organizing and cleaning the house. You’re not quite ready to put the house on the market yet, but as you go through things and get rooms in order, you can start thinking about things like having your real estate agent take interior photos to accompany your eventual listing.
As the month progresses, you’ll likely have boxes and tubs that are starting to fill with stuff. You’re not in full packing mode yet, but you do have things that need to go into storage. With an affordable unit at one of our metro-area locations, you can get things out of the way and into a secure space until moving day arrives.
June
June can be a great time to start on those minor upgrades that are going to make your house really stand out. Painting interior walls, replacing broken light fixtures, and updating the landscaping can greatly improve your property’s overall appeal. Since it’s summer, you can start with the outside projects, making sure your trees, bushes, and grass are maintained. If the exterior of the house needs new paint or any repairs, then you can take care of those projects as well.
You can also use the month of June to start looking at prospective houses. You may already have a few in mind, and now is a great time to schedule viewings through your real estate agent. It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of people move during the summer, so you may have some competition when it comes to a house you really want. Keeping your options open is often the best way to find a house that’s in your price, as well as suits your needs.
July
July is when you really want to start packing things up and getting the house ready to put on the market. Start by packing your personal things such as mementos and photos so that your house isn’t overly “personalized” when potential buyers come to see it. You can pack up everything the basement and the garage, leaving out only those essential items. If you don’t have anywhere to store the boxes you have packed, we’re always ready to help.
August
Once August arrives, you’re in the homestretch of your moving timeline. You’ve hopefully found a house or apartment that you’re going to move in to, and you likely have a buyer lined up for your house. You’ll need to schedule an inspection of your potential new home before you make an offer, but once everything checks out, you can submit your offer. It will take a few weeks or longer before you can close on the house, but you’ll be able to rest easy, knowing that you’re that much closer to the end of the process.
As for your current home, you and your family will need to finish packing and organizing so that you can be ready once moving day arrives. You may want to do a few more minor projects or at least a deep clean of the property, and then everything will be ready to go for the new homeowner. You’ll be able to move before the kids start school again, and hopefully you’ll be settled into your new home before the hectic schedule of fall begins.
