Which Storage Space is the Best for Your Needs

Storage is something that we all need. Luckily, for many homeowners, there are a few different options available. In today’s blog post, the team at EZ Storage® — a secure self-storage facility in Detroit — is going to go over a few of the most common storage methods that homeowners take advantage of as well as a few pros and cons to each. If you’re ever interested in learning more about our storage units or the other services that we offer, contact our office and we would be more than happy to answer questions.

Basement

One of the most common methods of storage that people use is their basement. If a house has a basement, it seems silly not to use this space within a house. With that being said, there are various pros and cons to utilizing basements as your primary form of storage. For starters, it’s incredibly convenient that all personal belongings are right inside of the home. A basement is also attached to the home, meaning that there’s no additional cost that needs to be factored in.

While there are a few pros to utilizing this space for storage, there are also a few cons that make finding outside storage ideal. One of the primary reasons is the loss of square footage within a house. If you want to add an office space, extra bedroom, or something of the sort, this square footage is a fantastic option. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do much good when it’s stuffed to the brim with items. This is one of the most common reasons that people choose to look elsewhere for their storage solution.

Attic

Another common part of the house that people choose to use for storage is their attic. This is another hit or miss option because some houses won’t have an attic designed for storage purposes. If it is set up to be used for storage purposes, this is absolutely something that can be used for some additional storage space, but again, there are pros and cons.

As with your basement, an attic provides easy-to-access storage within the comfort of your home. If the attic is already set up to be used for storage, then you also don’t have to worry about any additional cost. The primary con to utilizing this space is that it’s very rare for there to be easy access to the attic. Usually, attics offer drop down stairs that are out of the way, but narrow and not especially safe.

Garage

When there’s not an attic or a basement, most people will turn to their garage for additional storage. If your garage is large enough to accommodate some extra storage, this is a fantastic option. Unfortunately for most, a garage doesn’t offer ample space for vehicles and storage. This is the primary con of utilizing the garage as the primary storage space.

Many of the reasons that people choose to use their garage for storage is because it is attached to the house (and if not, it’s at least close in proximity). This is yet another storage solution that does not come with any additional cost.

Storage Unit

The last method of storage that we’re going to talk about in today’s blog post is a self-storage unit. Many people think that this method of storage is excessive, but that’s simply because this particular storage solution requires a bit more travel than the basement or garage do. The distance as well as the fact that this space is rented out are the two primary reasons that people avoid using a storage unit, but the pros far outweigh these cons.

Storage units are a fantastic solution because of the space that you’re able to take advantage of with so much open space in your home. From the open area in the basement to the additional space in the garage, when you remove these items that are taking up room, you’re able to actually enjoy your home as a home and not as a storage solution.
