What Storage Spaces Does Your House Have?

Organized closet space

When you moved into your house, one of the first things you likely did was start putting things away and organizing each room. You relied on the storage spaces in your home to keep every room neat and tidy, as well as provide a safe spot for important items such as family heirlooms. At EZ Storage® in St. Louis, we understand the importance of ample storage, and if you’ve filled up the spots in your home, we can help you find the right self-storage solution. Your home may not have all of the storage spots we’ll cover in this blog, but for the ones you do, we hope you’ll find some tips on how to keep things organized.

Closets

Closets are often the first place you go to when you need to store something. You have a front closet where you keep coats and jackets, bedroom closets where you keep clothes and shoes, and a linen closet for sheets and towels. It’s nice to have lots of closet space, but it can be easy to stuff things into a closet when you’re not sure where else to put it.

One way to avoid having things fall out of the closet when you open the door is to spend a few days each year organizing each one. If your front closet is packed with coats that no longer fit or that no one wears, then pull those items out and donate them. If the linen closet can’t fit any more sheets or towels, think about how you could repurpose some of those linens, such as using them for cleaning.

Cabinets and Cupboards

The kitchen and bathroom are the main locations of your cabinets and cupboards, and these are important storage spots for dishware, cleaning supplies, and other items. One drawback to storing things in a cabinet or cupboard is that you might put items in there and forget about them, eventually putting other things in front of them. You end up looking high and low for a certain item, only to find that it’s safely stashed away in a cabinet you haven’t opened in months.

A good way to avoid overstuffed cabinets and cupboards in your home is to be mindful of what you store in them. It can be helpful to make a list of what’s in each kitchen cabinet, and if you have something like china or servingware that you only use on special occasions, then think about where else you could store these items, such as in the dining room. As for the bathroom cabinets, it can be smart to clean these out once a year, getting rid of anything you no longer need.

Garage Storage

The garage is a prime spot for storing boxes, tubs, and other items that don’t have a designated spot in the house. You might keep your holiday decorations in the garage when they’re not in season, and you may keep boxes of old toys, photos, and other heirlooms on the shelf next to them.

You may also use the garage to store lawn and garden tools, bicycles, and other outdoor items. While the garage is a perfect spot for such things, you’ll still want to have room to park your vehicles inside, especially during the fall and winter months. By investing in hooks, shelves, and other organizational tools, you can keep your weed trimmer on the wall while the bikes hang from the garage ceiling. For anything seasonal, such as camping gear or boating items, putting those things into self-storage can help you create more space.

Under-the-Stairs Storage

If your home has storage under the stairs, then you might use it to store all types of things. You might keep board games and puzzles in there, or you might use it as something of a mini library where your family stores their favorite books. If your home doesn’t have a front coat closet, then this space can function as a spot for winter jackets and boots, instead of trying to fit those things into the bedroom closet.

Under-the-stairs storage is often limited by the size and shape of the space, but with a little creativity and ingenuity, you can utilize it to its fullest potential. Even if you store just a few boxes in there, it means you don’t have to find somewhere else to put them.

Storage Shed

A backyard storage shed can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your property organized. Instead of keeping your lawnmower, weed trimmer, bicycles, and other outdoor items in the garage, you can move them into the storage shed for safekeeping. This frees up more space in the garage for vehicle parking or for setting up a home workshop.

One thing to keep in mind with a storage shed is that, as with any home storage spot, it can fill up quickly. It’s important to be mindful about what you put in the shed, as you’ll want to be able to get to things quickly and easily when you need them. If you have a stack of flower pots that’s been in the shed for years, take the time to sort through the pots and decide which ones are worth keeping. Even getting rid of a few items each year can make life much easier!
