What You’ll Be Storing

One of the first things that you’re going to want to take into consideration is what it is that you’ll be storing. If you’re simply going to be storing boxes, you can get a pretty good idea of how large of a unit you’ll need simply by taking the measurements of the box and figuring how many boxes will be able to fit within the various unit options.

On the other hand, if you’ll be using your storage unit to store items that are on the larger side, you’re definitely going to want to take some measurements so that you have an idea of how wide and tall of a unit you’re going to need right off the bat.

Additional Inventory

In some instances, the items that are being brought to the storage unit are the only things that need to be accounted for. For others, the items that are initially stored in a unit are only the beginning. Depending on the reason that you’re renting a storage unit, you will want to determine whether or not you are going to be adding inventory to the unit down the road.

If you believe that you will be adding to the inventory, you’re going to want to account for what all you will be adding to the unit. Once you’ve got a general idea of the items that will be added and how much room they’ll take up, add this on to the size that you had calculated prior, and now you have an even better estimate of the space that you’ll need.

Accessibility

Another significant factor that you’ll want to consider is how much access you’re going to need to the items in your storage unit. If you’re just going to be storing them there and you don’t anticipate needing any access to them, then you can plan to pack your storage unit full. On the other hand, if you plan to go in and out of your storage unit with ease, you are also going to want to account for some room to move. Depending on which items you’ll need access too and how frequently, you are going to need to figure out how you’ll be storing items in the unit and what the best way to maneuver within that space will be.
