Things to Consider for Student Self-Storage
The holidays are almost here and for college students, that means semester finals followed by a break from school. Some may be traveling home to see family, while others may be preparing for a semester abroad. Whatever the case may be, there will be thousands upon thousands of students hitting the skies and the roads over the next few months, and a majority of those students will need to find a place to store their belongings. At EZ Storage® in Detroit, we’re always happy to help local students find the self-storage solutions they need. In this post, we’ll look at some things to consider before putting your things in a storage unit.
1. Are You Looking for a New Place to Live?
If you have to move out of the dorms or your apartment before the holidays, chances are you’ll be looking for a new place to live before the spring semester starts. You might wait until after the holidays to look for a place, which means storing your belongings is pretty much your only option. Instead of asking a friend to watch over your stuff for a few weeks, you can rent a storage unit for a month and know that your things are safe and sound.
2. How Long Will You Be Gone?
If you’re only going to be gone for a week or two, storing things with a friend or relative can make sense. However, if you’re planning to be gone for more than a month, or you’re flying to Italy to start your interterm or semester abroad, than you may need storage for a longer period of time. Knowing how long you will be gone will help you budget for storage costs, and you can designate an emergency contact who can check on your stuff while you’re away.
3. What Are You Going to Store?
If you live in a dorm room, chances are you don’t have to worry about moving any furniture. The bed, desk, and dresser stay in the room, so all you have to store are your clothes, your electronics, and maybe some school supplies. You’ll probably only need a small storage unit, such as our 5’x5’ option. If you have things, such as electronics, that need to be stored at a certain temperature during the winter months, be sure to ask about our climate-controlled spaces.
If you’re moving out of an apartment and you’re taking a couch, chair, or bed with you, you’ll need to pick a larger storage unit. We have plenty of sizes available, and making a list of everything you need to store will make it easier to choose the right one and keep track of everything you put into it.
4. Make Sure You Don’t Store Things You Need
While this goes hand-in-hand with keeping a list of what you’ll store, it’s important to make sure you don’t put something into storage that you’ll need while you’re traveling. Things such as winter clothing, shoes, and other items you want to have with you should be put aside while you’re packing things for storage; that way, you won’t accidentally store them!
If you’re a college student in the Detroit area who needs self-storage for winter break, let EZ Storage® help you find the perfect options. We have several locations across the metro area, and there’s a good chance that you can find one that’s close to campus or your apartment. The staff at each one can answer your questions and help you find the right unit, even if it’s only for a month or two. If you have friends or roommates who need to store things as well, you can split the cost so everybody saves!
