The Post-Holiday Purge

With Thanksgiving just a few days away and the December holidays just around the corner, you’re probably doing all that you can to get ready for house guests, preparing meals, and shopping for gifts. At EZ Storage® in Detroit, we know how stressful this time of year can be, and even though you enjoy the season, you often have a sense of relief when it’s over.

Once the guests have left and you’ve taken down the decorations, you might just want to sit down and relax. However, there might be lots of clutter to deal with, or rooms that need to be put back together. The post-holiday purge can be a great way to get your home organized and to return some semblance of order to your household. If you need an affordable self-storage unit for anything, then we’ll be here to help!

Make Room for New Things

One of the biggest challenges after the holidays can be finding a spot for all the new things you and your family received as gifts. You love everything you got, but now you have to find somewhere to put it. Your closets and drawers might be full, so starting with those can help you make room for new items. You can pull out old clothes that you no longer wear, and make a donate pile to take to a local charity or nonprofit.

If the kids get a bunch of new toys this year, then have them go through their bedroom or playroom and take out items that they no longer want or play with on a regular basis. This will create more space for the new things they got, and you can give away the old toys to those who maybe didn’t receive any gifts this year.

Take Stock of Your Decorations

You might be someone who takes down their decorations as soon as the calendar turns to January, simply because you want to get the house in order sooner rather than later. As you’re taking things down, take some time to look at the pieces and accessories. Are their ornaments that are cracked or broken? Are some things beginning to look a bit outdated? By taking stock of your decorations, you can decide what to keep and what to toss. This will also help when it comes time to box everything up and store it until next year!

Go Through Books and Magazines

If you’re a bookworm or you have several subscriptions to various magazines (or you got a new subscription as a holiday gift), then your collections may have begun to stack up over the past 12 months. After the holidays are over, it can be good to go through your books and magazines and see what you can get rid of or donate. You might need to make room on your shelves or coffee table for new items, and boxing up some old books can be a great way to feel like your home has less stuff in it!

Find Storage Today

Even though the holidays haven’t happened yet, you can prepare for the post-holiday purge by finding a self-storage unit today. We have a number of great spaces available, and with multiple locations across the greater Detroit area, it’s easy to find a unit that’s close to your home. Our staff members and resident managers can help you choose the best option for your belongings, and they’ll gladly answer any questions you may have. With month-to-month leases, you can rent a unit for as long as you need, whether that’s just for the season or for the entire year.
