Summer Moving Safety

With the official first day of summer now less than a week away, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared for longer days and warmer temperatures. This is especially important if you’re going to be moving to a new house or apartment, or if you’re going to be moving some items out of your garage or basement and into a self-storage unit.
At EZ Storage® in St. Louis, we can help you find the ideal solutions. If you have a few boxes you want to move out of the attic, or you’re planning to relocate to a new residence this summer, then we can keep your belongings safe and sound. In this post, we’ll look at some safety tips for summer moving.
Take Steps to Beat the Heat
June and July are popular times to move, since the kids are out of school and you likely have a few vacation days that you can take from work. Even if you’re just taking one or two days to organize the house and move some things into your storage unit, it’s important to take steps to beat the heat.
1. Stay Hydrated
If you’re going to be moving in June, July, August, or anytime when it’s hot outside, then make sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. You’re likely going to sweat while carrying things, and it’s very important to replenish your body with water throughout the day.
2. Wear Proper Attire
While you know to wear a t-shirt and shorts on a hot day, it’s important to make sure your attire fits properly. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal, but you’ll want to make sure it’s not too loose so that it catches on boxes or the edges of furniture as you’re moving your belongings. A hat can also be a good addition, since it will help keep the sun off of your head and out of your eyes.
3. Move in the Morning
The temperature in St. Louis can easily reach the mid 90s on a summer afternoon, which is why it’s a good idea to move as many things as you can in the morning, before the heat becomes unbearable. Avoiding the hottest hours of the day can help keep you and whomever is helping you safe from heatstroke and other conditions, and starting earlier in the day can mean that you’re done sooner rather than later.
4. Find a Spot to Relax
If you’re moving to a new house, then you’ll hopefully be able to turn on the air conditioner and relax in a nice, cool house once the move is done. If you’re putting things into storage, then find a spot nearby, such as a coffee shop or ice cream parlor, where you can sit down and relax once you’re done carrying boxes and furniture. EZ Storage® has four locations in the metro area, so it shouldn’t be hard to find a casual spot to cool down once you’re done for the day.
