Storing Your Electronics Inventory

Owning an electronics store can be challenging, especially as you try to compete with the big-box stores in the area. However, there are several stores in Pittsburgh that still sell and repair electronics, and there is a newfound appreciation for vintage electronics such as record players, stereo systems, and video game consoles. People often look for those rare electronics that you can’t find in a big-box store (think original Atari), and only those small mom and pop stores carry such items these days. If you own a local electronics shop and need storage for some of your inventory, EZ Storage® is here to help.

Original Boxes

dreamstime_xxl_44713976We’ve written before about storing electronics in their original boxes, but it’s worth stressing the point again. The original manufacturer created a box and packaging that was made specifically for an item, to keep it protected during shipment and storage, so why wouldn’t you take the same approach when putting your inventory into a self-storage space? The cardboard and shaped styrofoam can keep the electronics from shifting and provide structure while the boxes are stacked on top of one another. The original box can also be perfect for sales presentation when a customer comes in looking for a specific item.

Cleaning Each Item

Part of your business may consist of buying old electronics from customers, and those items may come in with a bit of wear and tear. You do your best to clean each item, and the best place to start is by removing any dust. Dust can be an electronic item’s worst enemy, but with the right care, you can keep everything in working order. It’s also a good idea to clean each item before you put it in its box and stack them in your storage unit. Once everything is in place, be sure to cover the boxes with plastic or something else that allows for some airflow, but still keeps away that harmful dust.

Climate-Controlled Storage

A climate-controlled storage unit can be a great option for electronics, since temperature fluctuations can cause problems for sensitive components found in record players and video game systems. Our facilities have a number of climate-controlled spaces available in a number of sizes, and we’ll gladly help you find one that works for you.

Taking Stock of Your Items

dreamstime_xxl_30651160You most likely do inventory every year, and putting some items into storage can be a great time to take stock of what you have in your store. There may be some electronics that don’t sell quite as fast, or that you have a large amount of, and moving some of those things into storage can make room for those items that do sell more quickly. By keeping a detailed list of what you have in store and what you have in your storage unit will help you find something quickly should a customer come in asking for a specific item.
