Set Your Storage Unit Up for Frequent Access

When the items that you’re keeping in your storage unit need to be accessed regularly, you need to get strategic with the way that you organize the space. Here at EZ Storage® in Philadelphia, we’ve helped countless individuals store their belongings in our units over the years. During that time, we’ve discovered some incredible tips that help to make the organization and accessibility in your unit as smooth as can be.
In today’s blog post, the team at EZ Storage® is going to go over a few things that you want to consider when organizing your unit as well as a few tips to make routine access a piece of cake. Let’s dive in.
Uniformed Boxes
One of the first things that you’re going to want to do is make sure that you’re packing up your items in uniformed boxes. When you use same-size boxes, it becomes significantly easier to stack the boxes in your storage unit.
We always suggest using small to medium-sized boxes for the majority of items because they can be packed tightly, won’t get too heavy, and are great for a majority of items. If you have some items that you need larger boxes for, keep in mind that these boxes might not have as sturdy of a bottom and shouldn’t be used for stacking. These boxes you might want to keep in a corner or along the side of the unit.
Figure Out What You’ll Need Access To
If you’re going to be needing access to certain things inside of your storage unit, the last thing that you want is to spend hours digging around the unit to find it. While it’s not always possible to determine everything that you’ll need to get to while it’s in the storage unit, you can figure out a few of the main things that you’ll need to pick up.
Many people use storage units to hold the things that they’re not using regularly so that they can just swing by, pick them up, and drop them back off when they’re done with them. A few examples of items that people often need access to within their storage unit are:
- Winter Clothes
- Holiday Decorations
- Kids Toys
- Tools
- Office Documents
- Camping Gear
If you’re able to create a list of the items that you will need to access in the storage unit, you can incorporate this knowledge into your strategy for how you’ll organize boxes inside the unit.
Label Everything
We can’t express just how important it is for you to label everything that is going to be going into your storage unit. Regardless of whether you are going to be frequenting your storage unit or not, labeling makes it significantly easier to find whatever it is that you’re looking for.
Now that you’ve made a list of the various things that you’re going to need regular access to, you want to make sure that you can find them quickly and easily. Whether you choose to color code boxes or you label them in a bold permanent marker, create a straight-forward method to figuring out what is in each box.
Write Out a List of Contents
Earlier this month we talked about creating a list to keep tabs of what is in your storage unit. This is a great tip for anyone using a storage unit, but it’s a must for anyone that’s going to be going in and out of their storage unit regularly and will need access to certain items.
Depending on how often you’re going to be going in and out of your storage unit, you can choose to write out a thorough list or a list that touches on the basics. This is a great time to write out your color-coding system and what will go within each box. If there are specific items you know you’re going to look for, make sure to include them and their location on the list. For example, if you know you’re going to be looking for your camping gear, write the items that are within the box, how it’s labeled, and where it is so that you can go in and find everything you’re looking for in no time!
