Self-Storage Tips & Tricks For Your Theatre Group
Pittsburgh has a thriving theatre scene that can trace its roots all the way back to the mid-18th century when plays were performed at Fort Pitt. Since those early days, dozens of amazing venues have popped up all over Pittsburgh and are home to many theatre groups who do their best to entertain, educate, and excite their audiences.
If you are a member of one of these incredible theatre groups, then you know that it’s a real labor of love. Theatre groups are often short on funds but have a passion to overcome any obstacle in order to deliver their message and put on a good show. After all, the show much go on!
One thing most theatre groups aren’t short on, though, is stuff. Whether it’s costumes, stage makeup, props, set dressing, or spare sound and lighting equipment, all those items need to be stored somewhere safe. That’s where our self-storage facility in Pittsburgh can help! We offer affordable, convenient storage solutions for theatre groups like yours. Here are some of our best tips for getting the most out of storage your theatre gear.
Tips and Trick for Storage Theatre Gear
Use clear bins and lots of labels.
When it comes to storing theatre items, ditch the cardboard box and opt for clear plastic bins, instead. These will make it much easier to find the item that you are looking for and plastic bins hold up better in long term storage. Label all of the bins you use with what’s inside, along with any information that might be useful such as what era it’s best used for or if there are prominent items from previous shows inside.
Sort by era & type you can.
It’s a lot easier to find what you are looking for when costumes and props are sorted by era. That way you can skip all the modern stuff for your revival of West Side Story (unless you are going for a modern take, of course). Items like glassware are harder to sort by era, so instead group them by type. That way whether you need a costume from the 1940’s or a cut glass vase, you know exactly where to find the items that you need.
Wrap expensive items up.
Electronics, sound gear, and other expensive items should be wrapped before they are put into storage. Moving blankets are good for electrical gear and bubble wrap is best for anything breakable. Give wrapped items a designated place in your storage space so you know where they are when you need them again. Wrapping up expensive items will protect the investment that’s been made in the theatre group.
Clean all of your costumes before you store.
Before you put any of your costumes into storage, make sure they get laundered and fully dried. Do this before they return to storage after a performance run, too. Allowing skin oils, perfumes, or lotions to stay on the material for long periods of time will eat away at the fabric and end up ruining the costume. Plus, they won’t smell great, either, if you don’t clean them before you stick them in storage.
Invest in the right storage equipment.
Organize your storage space with metal shelving and clothing racks. Costumes are best stored hanging, while plastic bins and loose items can go on your metal shelving. This will give everything a place and make it easier to pull out the items you need without having to completely empty the storage space each time.
