If you have large pieces of furniture that you want to put into storage, there are some things to consider before you pack up the couch or dining room table and drop them off at your local self-storage facility. At EZ Storage® in St. Louis, we want to make the process as easy as possible for you, and in this blog, we’ll look at some ways to safely prepare and pack your furniture for storage.

Disassemble and Wrap Carefully

dreamstime_xxl_12371457 (1)With pieces such as a large tables or bed frames, it’s often best to disassemble and wrap each piece carefully. Tables with spindle legs can become damaged while moving them, so taking the legs off and wrapping each one in bubble wrap can minimize that risk. By flipping the tabletop over, you can tape the wrapped legs to the bottom and keep everything together. Be sure to put all the nuts, bolts, and other hardware in plastic bags and keep them taped to the table, or in a safe place at home.

For couches, chairs, and other furniture you’re not going to take apart, make sure you cover them appropriately once they’re in your storage unit. Plastic covers can be an affordable option, but they’re not always the best for certain materials. If you want to properly protect your soft, comfortable furniture, consider using blankets or sheets. Our climate-controlled storage spaces can also be a great option for your furniture.

How Long will Your Furniture be Stored?

Another thing to consider is how long you will be storing your furniture. If it’s only going to be a few months, you can give your couch or table a quick clean and prepare it for storage. If you know it’s going to be six months or longer, you may want to thoroughly clean the surface of each item before wrapping or covering it. Vinyl, leather, and wood all require different cleaning techniques, and it can greatly benefit your furniture to be clean before you put it in storage for an extended period of time. Again, a climate-controlled unit may be the best option if you’re going to store fragile items or items that shouldn’t be exposed to extreme hot or cold.
