Planning for Storage, Part 1

If you’ve been thinking about putting certain items into storage, then it’s important to make a cohesive plan so that you know what you’ll be storing, how you’ll get it to your unit, and how long it will be there. In this two-part series, we’ll help you create that plan and see it through to perfection.

Go Through Each Room

The best place to start on your plan is to go through each room of your house and see what could be stored. Do you have random boxes in your guest room closet or hallway linen closet that could be stored elsewhere? Do you have old appliances in the kitchen that you want to swap out for new ones? When walking through your house, write down those items that you want to store, and list them in order of priority. That way, when it comes time to load things into your car or truck, you’ll know what’s going and what’s staying!

Make a List

Lists are very important when it comes to self-storage. Writing down each item is essential, as is making a list for what’s in each box. If you have several boxes that you’re taking to your storage unit, then make sure you write down the contents of each one. This will help you find specific items the next time you’re in your unit, looking for something. You’ll also want to label each box with the room it came from, along with a short list of what’s inside, such “utensils,” “desk supplies,” etc.

Figure Out Transportation

If you have larger items, such as furniture or appliances, that you want to store, then you may need to figure out an alternative mode of transportation. You can’t fit a couch into your four-door sedan, and your friend with a pickup may not be around on the day you want to move things into storage.
