Making the Most of the Space in Your Storage Unit

Whether you’re in the process of moving or you are using a storage unit to make some more space in the house, you want to make sure that you’re making the most of the space that you’re renting. From the methods you use to organize your items to the way that you go about placing boxes within the unit, there are countless ways that you can make your unit work for you.

As your go-to storage unit in Detroit, the team at EZ Storage® fully understands this need and we want to help! That’s why, in today’s blog post, we are going to go over a few tips that can help you make the most of the space in your storage unit. So, without further ado, let’s get started on a few fantastic tips that you can take into consideration before you move your items over to the unit.

Stack Boxes

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that stacking boxes is one of the best ways that you can make the most of the space within your storage unit. A majority of storage units are not going to be overwhelmingly large, so if you’re storing lots of small items, you’re definitely going to want to pack them up tightly in a box and stack them on top of each other.

When it comes to stacking boxes, you want to make sure you’re buying boxes that are similar in size to make stacking easier. Aside from being able to optimize space and increase the ease of stacking, similar box sizes creates a more stable stack — something you’ll be thankful for when you start moving things around.

Must-Have Items In Front

When it comes to how you put items in your storage unit, you want to make sure that you’re putting the must-have items up front. This is especially important if you’re going to be stacking your boxes up high. The last thing that you want is to have to go through the stacks that you’ve made and find the items you’re looking for. Rather, leave the boxes you know you’re going to use regularly up front and it’ll be incredibly easy to get into them and find the things you’re looking for.

Categorize Your Items

Once you’ve set aside the boxes that you know you’re going to use regularly, it’s time to organize the rest of your boxes. Something that makes it relatively easy to find items down the road is categorizing your items and your boxes so that they’re with similar items. So, for example, we always suggest organizing boxes by the room that they correspond with. This can also be done for holidays so that you can quickly find where all of your Christmas decorations are.

Disassemble Larger Items

One of the most common ways that space is lost in a storage unit is because furniture is stored as-is. Of course, there’s no way to go without storing large pieces of furniture, but there are some ways that you can minimize the amount of space that furniture is taking up. The best way to do that is by disassembling your furniture so that you can stack it up alongside the wall or in the back. With a few blankets or moving blankets draped over your furniture, you’re able to store your belongings safely while still optimizing the space within your unit.

Sketch a Diagram

The tips that we’ve listed above definitely help make the most of the space that you have, but if you’ve stuffed your unit full, it can be a little intimidating to think about unpacking. More importantly, it can be nerve-wracking to wrack your brain about which box you had packed your family photos or which corner your kitchen table is in. To avoid that being the case for you and your storage unit, we suggest sketching a diagram and making notes of where you’ve put things. Then, when you do need to get in there to find something, it’s so much easier!
