Home Storage and Organization Tips

Since it’s likely that you’re spending most of your time at home these days, it can be beneficial to take the time to evaluate your storage and organization methods. While you may have already completed your spring cleaning for the year, you may not have tackled all of the closets, nooks, and crannies of your house. At EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we can help you find the right self-storage unit for anything you need to store outside of the house, but we can also provide you with some tips on how to keep things organized inside the house.

Go Through Your Food Storage Containers

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably have a healthy collection of food storage containers, along with the matching lids. You’ve collected these containers over the years, buying more when you lost the lids to a certain set, or you were gifted new containers for the holidays. Whatever the case may be, if these containers are taking over your kitchen cabinets, it can be beneficial to go through them all to see which ones are worth keeping. If a container doesn’t have a lid, you might be able to recycle it, or you can upcycle it into a planter for starting seeds. You can also give old containers to the kids to let them use when playing outside!

Organize Your Shoes

You may be someone who believes you can’t have too many shoes, but if your closets are overflowing with boots, high heels, flats, and more, it might be time to get organized. You’re fairly successful at keeping pairs together, but you might not be able to find the shoes you want as you’re getting ready to leave the house.

You can start by grouping your shoes by purpose, such as putting athletic shoes together, followed by formal shoes, and ending with everyday footwear. From there, you can organize the shoes in your closet by adding racks that hold each category, or with an over-the-door organizer that makes each pair easier to access. The choice is up to you, but remember, it may be time to part with shoes that you no longer wear or that don’t fit anymore!

Sort Clothes by Season

Your closets and dressers probably have plenty of room for all of your clothes, but not if you’re putting everything, from summer t-shirts to winter sweaters, into one drawer or area. Sorting items by season can be a great way to know where everything is when you need it, and you can rotate your closet based on what time of year it is. You can dedicate one drawer to everyday t-shirts you wear during the warmer months, while setting aside a specific section of your closet for sweaters, jackets, and more.

If you don’t have the space to keep everything in your closet, dresser, or wardrobe, putting things in plastic bins can be a great way to protect your clothing until you need it again. Small plastic bins can be stored under the bed or at the back of the closet, and you can swap things out as the seasons change. If you don’t have enough space in the house for everything, our team can help you find a small storage unit that will protect your clothing for as long as you need.
