At EZ Storage® in St. Louis, we know how exciting the holidays can be, but we also know how stressful and time-consuming it can be to put everything away once the season is over. When it comes to holiday storage, we’re here to help you find the perfect self-storage unit for decorations, large gifts, and anything else that you want to put away until next year. When you visit one of our metro-area locations, the staff will gladly help you find the right space!

Ditch the Original Boxes

One thing that can make storing holiday decorations easier is to ditch the original boxes. While it can be smart to keep the box for a fragile table centerpiece or ornament, your standard ornaments and decorations can be wrapped in tissue paper, bubble wrap, or other padding materials and placed in one big box. For smaller ornaments, consider putting them into egg cartons to protect them!

As for holiday lights, it’s probably not likely that you’re going to get them back into the original box once they’ve been taken off the tree, the mantel, or the exterior of your home. However, you don’t want them to be a tangled mess next year when you’re trying to hang them again, so after you’ve ditched the original box, wrap them around a sturdy piece of cardboard, keeping the plug ends accessible.

If you have gift boxes that you need to store, then consider breaking them down before putting them away for the season. As for big gifts that came in boxes, see if you can store them without keeping the box, since that’s what usually takes up the most space in a closet, the garage, or a storage unit. You can save a lot of space by putting multiple gifts into a sturdy cardboard box or plastic bin!

Buy Durable Plastic Bins

Speaking of plastic bins, investing in some durable options can make holiday storage much less stressful. Once you have your ornaments and lights packed into cartons and wrapped around cardboard, you can put everything in a plastic bin and label it accordingly. These bins and tubs are often easy to stack and feature integrated handles that make them easy to carry. Cardboard boxes can be a viable option, but there’s always the risk of crushing the box by putting too much weight on top of it.

Gift Wrap and Trees

If you’re someone who buys gift wrap in bulk every holiday season, then you likely have quite a bit left over each year. While gift wrap should roll up tightly, you might have several rolls that you need to store. Investing in large shipping tubes can be a great way to store multiple gift wrap rolls until you need them next year!

As for your artificial tree, cramming it back into the box might not be an option. The folding branches don’t quite collapse like they used to, and the top section seems to grow bigger every year. A large shipping tube should fit over the tree, and you can insert it trunk first. The compact tube should compress the tree down, and you can place a plastic cap on the tube for storage. When you open it up next year, you can fluff things out before you decorate!
