Getting Ready for Colder Weather

This year has been different in quite a few ways, but one thing that remains the same as years past is that once September arrives, you can count on colder weather being on its way. Certain parts of the country have already seen their first snowfall of the year, and as for Pittsburgh and the surrounding area, freezing temperatures aren’t too far away.
At EZ Storage®, we’re here to help you get ready for colder days ahead, whether that means providing a self-storage unit for your summer gear, or helping you find a spot for that car or motorcycle you won’t be driving this winter. With three locations across the greater metro area, we make it easy to find a storage space that’s close to home.
Get Seasonal Apparel Out of Storage
Perhaps you already have a storage unit, where you keep seasonal items such as winter coats and boots. With colder days on their way, now can be the perfect time to get those things out of storage and assess their condition. If stored properly, coats, jackets, boots, and other winter apparel can last for years, helping keep you warm for several seasons.
You may also have heavier sheets and blankets that you need for the winter months that are currently in storage. When you take these out of their boxes or tubs, be sure to check them thoroughly for any signs of damage or wear and tear. If they’re looking a little worn, this year might be the perfect time to replace them!
Buy New Winter Coats and Boots
Speaking of replacing items, seasonal apparel such as coats and boots will eventually need to be replaced as well. If you have kids, they will quickly outgrow a coat or pair of boots that you bought them a few years ago, so you might need to purchase some new items this year so that everyone is properly protected from the cold and snow. You may also find that winter footwear and outerwear need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear brought about by prolonged exposure to the elements.
You may also want to buy new winter coats and boots this year simply because you’re looking for new styles or a better fit. Your older items are still in fairly good condition, and you figure that you could donate the more gently used items to a local charity. You can store these things until you decide what to do with them, and save the closet space for your new winter coats and boots.
Update Your Snow Removal Equipment
As you’re shopping for new winter outerwear or going through the items you’ve had for years, your mind eventually turns to snow. While you know that the snow can be fun to play in, you also know that you have to remove it in order to get to work, take the kids to school, and run errands. If your snow shovels or snowblower are currently in storage, take them home now and make sure they’re in good condition before the first real snowfall of the season. You might need to repair or replace your snow removal equipment so that you’re not left stranded when you need to get out of the garage or driveway.
Once you’ve updated or repaired your snow shovels or snowblower, you’re going to need to make room for them in the garage. The shovels can be hung on the wall, but the snowblower will take up floor space. You can create more room by moving summer and fall items, such as gardening supplies, into your storage unit. If there’s something you’re not going to need until spring, you can store it and have plenty of space for your winter tools.
