Getting Ready for Cold and Snow

Now that November is here, people in Detroit can begin getting ready for the colder months of the year. Freezing temperatures and snow will soon be here, and at EZ Storage®, we’re ready to help you find the right self-storage unit for anything you need to store during the winter months.
As you’re getting ready for cold and snow, there are some things you can do around the house to make sure your property is ready for the frigid weather. Cleaning the garage, rearranging the furniture, and more can help you stay warm and cozy until spring arrives once again.
Clean the Garage
The last thing you want to do on a cold December morning is to try to start your car after it’s been sitting in the driveway all night. Depending on the age of your vehicle, it might have a hard time starting in cold weather, not to mention how cold you’ll be yourself as you sit in a car that hasn’t warmed up yet. If you have a garage, make sure there’s room to park at least one vehicle inside during the winter months.
You may have to clean and organize the garage in order to make room for your car or truck, which can mean moving some things into storage. If you have outdoor gear such as tents or chairs that are in the way, why not put them in storage for the winter and make space for your car? If there’s a motorcycle or other recreational vehicle in your garage that you won’t ride until next spring or summer, move it into your storage unit and use the parking space for your everyday vehicle. Instead of trying to start the car in the driveway, you can go from the warm house to the car that’s parked inside, and not have to worry about getting cold.
Rearrange Your Furniture
One of the best things you can do to get your house ready for winter is to have your furnace checked. But did you know that one of the biggest impacts on your heating system’s efficiency is where your furniture is placed? If you have couches or chairs blocking your heat registers, your furnace is going to have to work twice as hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature during the winter months. You’ll also want to check on the placement of your rugs, bookshelves, and other items that could be blocking a vent or return.
If you need to rearrange your furniture in order to allow for better airflow, it could be a good time to assess just what furniture you need in the house. Perhaps there’s an old chair in the living room or family room that you’ve been meaning to get rid of or put into storage for some time. Now could be the perfect opportunity to move it out of the way and keep it from blocking your vents or returns.
Buy a New Snow Shovel or Snowblower
A good snow shovel or snowblower should last you several years, but if your current snow removal equipment is looking a little worse for wear, it might be time for some replacements. You’ll be very glad you have a new shovel or snowblower after that first big snowfall, making it easy to dig your way out, even if you’re not going anywhere for a few days.
You’ll also need somewhere to store your new snow removal equipment, which is where a clean and organized garage can prove beneficial. You can store these items in the garage for the season, and if you want to store them elsewhere after winter has ended, we can help you find the ideal spot.
