Finding Enough Space for Your Stuff

When renting a self-storage unit, it’s important to have enough space for all of the things you need to store. Many people overestimate the amount of space they need, and when they move everything in, they find out there’s a lot of room left over. While it’s good to leave space to walk around everything in your unit, you don’t want to pay for a lot of unused square footage. You also don’t want to underestimate the amount of space you need, because when you show up to move things in, you’ll find that your unit is full before half your belongings are unloaded. At EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, our staff can help you calculate the size of unit you need, and our handy size guide can be a great place to start.

Calculating Square Feet

dreamstime_xxl_60022794It’s fairly simple to calculate square feet. For example, if your master bedroom is 10’ long x 15’ wide, then you simply multiply those numbers together (10×15) to come up with 150 square feet. An average bedroom, when you take out most of the free space, can hold quite a few things, so if you have a bed frame, a dresser, and a sofa, they should fit in a 10’x15’ storage unit. If you have items that are much bigger, such as a piano or a dining room hutch, you may need to look at larger storage units, such as those that are 10’x20’ or 10’x30’. Our Pittsburgh-area facilities have both standard and climate-controlled units in various sizes, and our staff members can help you choose the best one based on your needs.

On the other hand, you’ll want to make sure you don’t try to fit too many items in a small space, since that can lead to damage. You may be trying to save on storage, but if you stack things too high or cram things in a tight space, items could fall and break, or come apart under the strain of something heavy being placed on top of it. It’s important to budget for self-storage, but you don’t want to sacrifice space in order to save a bit each month, especially if it comes at the cost of the safety and security of your belongings.

Planning for Storage

Your belongings may not be grouped as tightly together as they will be in your rented unit, but it can give you a good idea of the size of unit you need. If you know the number and general size of the items you need to store, our staff can give you a recommendation on the best unit size.

When you need to store some of your belongings, make sure you know how much space you need. The team at EZ Storage® can help you find the best unit at an affordable rate, and our month-to-month leases make it easy to store things for as long as you need.
