Cleaning Out Your Self-Storage Unit
A storage unit is the perfect solution for when you’re on the move, when you need some additional space in the house, or when you just need some time to get things organized. Whether you’ve been renting a storage unit for personal or business reasons, there always comes a time when you need to empty out your storage unit. If that time has come for you, it can be a bit overwhelming to think about what it’s going to be like emptying an entire unit full of your belongings.
In today’s blog, the team at EZ Storage® is going to go over a few tips that can help make cleaning out your storage unit just a little bit easier. Let’s get started.
Create an Inventory
When it comes time to empty your storage unit, the first thing that you’re going to want to do is get an inventory on the immediate things that you see within the storage unit. In some instances, you may already have an inventory of the items that you’ve stored in your unit, in which case you can skip right ahead to the next step. If you have not, however, it’s good to create an inventory of the items that you see so that you have a general idea of how much you’re going to need to move out of the unit.
Creating an inventory of what is in the unit is primarily going to be used for preparation. You want to make sure that you have enough help and space to account for everything that’s going to need moving. Aside from that, you also want to get a general idea of the amount of time it will take you to move everything in the unit. So, once you’re ready to clear your unit — create an inventory so that you can move to the next step: planning.
Get Prepared
Cleaning out a storage unit is not always an easy task, but it’s significantly easier if you’re prepared. When it comes time to empty out your storage unit, you want to make sure that you’re plenty prepared for the day of labor that lies ahead. From renting out a truck to carry your belongings to having a variety of cleaning products so that you’re able to clean out the unit, this day is something that requires just a little bit of additional preparation.
By simply being prepared to move your items from the storage unit to your office or your home, you can start to get yourself in the mindset needed to clean out a unit efficiently. In the end, preparation goes much further than many people realize.
Create a Game Plan
Aside from getting prepared to physically move the items, you also want to have a general plan for what you’re going to do with your items once you get them moved. One of the most common mistakes that people make is they move all of their belongings without having any idea of how they’re going to re-assemble or unpack them. Before you get everything loaded up in a moving truck or the trunk of your car, create a game plan so that you know what needs to be moved and when. This helps to avoid any clutter from building up.
Declutter
As with any time that you move belongings from one place to the next, it never hurts to spend some time decluttering. Regardless of why you got a storage unit in the first place, the reality is that you went months (maybe longer) without the items that are inside of the unit. If, in that time, you’ve upgraded certain items or you’ve discovered you no longer have the need for something, it’s time to toss it.
When you begin to shuffle through things and you come across items you no longer need or have a moment where you recognize you’ve made it months without this particular thing, don’t feel bad getting rid of it! You’ll be thankful to shed some of these items in the long run.
