Are You Abiding in Public Storage Restrictions?
Keep your Detroit self-storage unit safe and stay in compliance with any restrictions.
Self-storage units are used for a variety of purposes including storage for when you move, transitioning from your parent’s home to college, and for business inventory storage. And while they provide extra space for when you need it most, there are still some restrictions in place to protect people and make the storage facility a safe place.
You’re paying rent every month for your Detroit storage unit so you should be able to store anything, right? Unfortunately, not! You can store many, many things in a storage unit, but there are some restrictions. Find out what those are with EZ Storage today!
Why do public storage restrictions exist?
These restrictions are here to infringe on your rights — they’re here to protect you and keep the storage facility safe. It’s important to know exactly what you can’t store to ensure safety to all the tenants. If you are caught with restricted items you may face potential damage costs and additional, more serious fines, depending on what you’re storing.
What You Should Not Put in a Storage Unit
Need a list of what you can’t have? Below are the restrictions of items you can’t have and why you’re not allowed to have them in your storage unit.
Humans
It’s unfortunate that we have to list this, but you are not allowed to store humans in your storage unit. Not to get too dark, but with an influx of human trafficking cases, it’s not unheard of for people to hide and store humans in self-storage units.
In the same vein, you can’t live in your storage unit. Because there is no plumbing and cooking in it is a potential fire hazard, you can’t take up residence.
Pets/Live Animals
Along the same lines as humans, you can’t store pets or live animals. While people have done it as a solution for their pets while they’re out of town, this simply is not okay. Board your animals with a specific facility or ask friends or neighbors to help out.
Not only does this cause harm to your animals, but your unit may begin to smell because they don’t have a proper place to use the bathroom. If you ever consider doing this just ask yourself, “what would Carol Baskin think?!”
Dangerous Materials
Avoid storing dangerous materials such as items that are flammable, corrosive, or things that pose a health risk.
- Restricted materials include:
- Weed killers
- Pesticides
- Propane
- Oils
- Paint
- Paint thinners
- Fireworks
- Charcoal
- Car batteries
- Anything that contains fuel (always drain it first before storing)
Wet Items
Wet or damp items are a huge issue because they will likely begin to grow mold, which damages your belongings but can also spread and affect the storage unit itself. Before you store anything, make sure it is completely dry.
Plants
Live plants just simply can’t survive a dark storage unit, but fake plants, go for it! Plants need essentials such as sunlight, wanted, and air — things that a storage unit just cannot provide. So, where can you store your plants when you move? Ask friends and family to take them, or you may even ask your local nursery to adopt them! Plant people love helping plants!
Scented Items
Whether it’s food, strongly scented candles, or body products, things that smell delicious will attract your neighborhood critters in no time! To avoid an infestation of any kind, just don’t store strongly scented items…at all!
Are you storing any restricted items?
Perhaps you’re you didn’t even realize that storing your lawnmower with fuel in it is dangerous, that the scented candle collection you have may draw pests, or your plants will likely die if kept in storage — we get this and we know that sometimes these obvious things don’t sink in until we’re told! The best course of action is to always ask for a list before you move your belongings into your Detroit self-storage unit so you can stay in compliance with the rules of the storage facility.
If you have any restricted items, it’s important to get them out of your storage unit immediately to create a safe facility for everyone.
