If you’re working from home more often these days due to COVID-19, or you’re about to start another college semester by taking online classes, then it’s important to have a dedicated workspace where you can focus on getting things done. At EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we know how essential it is to have an organized space where you can do computer work, paperwork, and more.
You might not have a home office currently, but if there’s a spare bedroom that’s not being used at the moment, it could provide the perfect space for an office. You’ll need to rearrange things somewhat, as well as move some furniture out of the room to make way for a desk, chair, and more. If you need a self-storage unit for anything, we’ll be here to help!
Move Furniture Out of the Room
One of the first things to consider when setting up a home office in the spare bedroom is what furniture can stay and what pieces need to go. While you may not want to move the bed frame and mattress out of the room, it might be necessary in order to fit your desk. The basement or garage can be good spots to store a bed, provided that it’s stored and protected properly. A small storage unit can also be an option, especially if you’re not sure how long you’ll be using the bedroom as an office.
If you have the space to leave the bed where it is and still move the desk into the room, then you can remove smaller furniture such as the dresser or wardrobe. You might need to position the bed differently so that you have space for your desk and chair, but it can be much easier to move a dresser than it is to move an entire bed.
Create The Right Layout
Once you have the right furniture in place, you can decide on the proper layout for the room. If there’s a big window that offers plenty of natural light, think about where you can place your desk so that you get the most benefit from several hours of sunlight. If you’re going to be using a desk lamp for task lighting, make sure your desk is close enough to a wall outlet.
You’ll also want to think about how you’ll navigate the room once it’s set up as an office. Will you have to walk around the bed to get to your desk, or will it be better to place the desk closer to the door? You definitely won’t want to feel cramped while working, so the more space you can give yourself, the better.
Keep Everything Organized
Organization is key when it comes to a productive workspace. If you have papers everywhere, or you can’t find the textbook you need for an upcoming test, your stress levels can quickly rise. Think about adding a small file cabinet or desk organizers that help you keep things contained. You might be using your home office for the foreseeable future, and the last thing you want is for it to become a cluttered mess.
You can also rethink how the room’s closet is used. If you don’t have space near your desk for a filing cabinet, you might be able to fit one in the closet. You’ll have to rearrange things in the closet, but with an hour or so of work, you can create the perfect setup for keeping things organized.
