Create an Inventory
The best way to keep track of what you have going in your storage unit is to create an inventory of all the items that will be going into storage — pretty straight forward. Now, you can make your inventory as detailed as you’d like. If you want to know every single item that’s going into your storage unit, anticipate setting aside some time to do just that. It’s not a quick and easy task for many, but if you want to be able to know exactly what is inside of your storage unit and where to find it, this is the best way to do so.
If you are someone that wants a detailed inventory without having to write everything down, taking a photograph of the items before you place them in a box is a much quicker way to document the items. If this is the route that you plan to take, we do suggest still labeling the box and including it in the picture so that you know what type of box you’re looking for. Once you’ve finished taking pictures of all of the items and boxes that will be going into the storage unit, upload them to your computer and create a file. You can also add them to Google Drive so that they’re saved to the cloud and easy to access wherever you may be!
Label Your Boxes
One of the very first things that you’re going to need to do when you start packing up items to put into your storage unit is to organize your items and put them into similar categories. Once you’ve done that, you want to put similar items in the same box, and label them accordingly. Type out a list of the items that are inside of the box and tape it on the side of the box that you’re going to see first. Now, when you’re in the storage unit looking at different boxes, you can quickly determine whether the box you’re holding is the one that has the item you’re looking for, or if you need to move on to the next box.
